Vines and views sold for R11 million

A 47 hectare portion of the Mereendal Wine Estate in the Durbanville Winelands was sold as a result of the auction process conducted by the ClareMart Auction Group. ‘’The group was instructed by the owner of Meerendal to sell a portion of the estate that was surplus to his cultivation requirements” said Managing Director, Andrew Koch. This impressive portion of the historic estate, dating back to 1702, has traditionally been utilized for the growing of wine grapes.

“There was a tremendous response to the marketing campaign undertaken by the ClareMart Auction Group and this was reflected in an extremely well attended auction. The prospective bidders registering at auction on the day included local as well as up-country bidders” said Koch. The land comprises of 17 hectares of cultivated vineyard as well as arable land with no dwellings or buildings on the portion. The property offers commanding views of the Boland and Tygerberg hills and is situated conveniently close to the Durbanville central business district.

“The bid was closed by an auction bidder however the property was ultimately sold through post auction negotiations” said Koch. A local purchaser secured the property for R11 million and it is understood, via the purchaser, that that portion of Meerendal is to be developed as a private lifestyle estate and will most likely cease to be farmed in the traditional sense.

“Although the property market environment saw a drop in demand for holiday resort or second homes, this demand seems to be flowing back into the market” adds Koch. “The sale of this land and in this location at a rate of approximately R230 000 per hectare is an indication that there is once again great interest in this type of property’’.
