A week after the assets of Canterbury Clothing South Africa was knocked down at a public auction by the ClareMart Auction Group , the sale is confirmed. According to Jonathan Smiedt who conducted the auction the sale price of  R18.66 million was confirmed today by liquidator Mr C.P. van Zyl of Progressive Administration (Cape) (pty) LTD   “We are delighted to confirm the sale to a local buyer and believe a market related price was achieved at the auction.”

The previous head office and warehouse of Canterbury South Africa went on an auction before a large audience of developers and investors from around the country.  This auction follows  Canterbury South Africa’s application for voluntary liquidation in January this year.  Sold on auction the  5 800m² warehouse, factory and  A-grade office space is situated in Woodstock in Cape Town.

2009 has proved to be a difficult year for the international rugby brand with  Canterbury Europe Ltd (“The Company”) being placed into administration on July 13th. According to reports in the international press British clothing and footwear retailer JD Sports Fashion Plc (JD.L) stepped in to save the 100 year old brand with its acquisition of the rugby brand for £6.5 million. JD  purchased the key trading assets and trade of Canterbury Europe Limited along with the global rights to the Canterbury and Canterbury of New Zealand brands, from the firm's administrators.
